Does your apprentice salary feel too tight to make it to the end of the month? You are not alone: according to the Dares, 44% of apprentices report having faced a lasting financial difficulty during their last year of contract. Good news: the prime d'activité, paid by the CAF subject to income conditions, can bring you up to €638.28 per month in 2026 — a significant income top-up, and often overlooked by apprentices. Since 5 March 2026, the CNAF instruction IT 2026-057 has corrected a regulatory bug that was depriving many apprentices of their right in case of a status change during the quarter. Here are all the official amounts, the conditions, the steps to follow and the complete method to claim the prime without errors, with SuperAlternant.

What you need to remember about the 2026 prime d'activité for apprentices

  • What is it? The prime d'activité is a monthly income top-up paid by the CAF (Caisse d'allocations familiales, the French family benefits fund) to workers on modest incomes, including apprentices aged 18 or over. It is calculated every 3 months based on a pre-filled quarterly declaration.
  • 2026 flat-rate amount: €638.28 per month for a single person with no children (revalued by +0.8% on 1 April 2026, by decree no. 2026-222 of 30 March 2026).
  • Income ceiling: around €2,000 net/month for a single person (above that, the prime decreases and then stops). For a 21-year-old apprentice in a 2-year post-Bac diploma, the eligibility threshold (€1,117.26 in net social income/month) is often met across the full pay scale.
  • 2026 novelty: since the CNAF instruction IT 2026-057 of 5 March 2026, the threshold check is performed month by month within the same quarter — which avoids wrongful refusals when you switch from a standard employee to an apprentice (or vice versa) during a quarter. Many apprentices will recover benefits they thought were lost.
  • Stackable with: APL (personal housing aid), Mobili-Jeune (housing aid for apprentices), family allowances, the driving licence aid, and the full amount of your apprentice salary (the prime d'activité is a top-up, not a replacement).
  • How to apply: on mesdroitssociaux.gouv.fr or on caf.fr, in a few clicks, with the pre-filled DRM declaration (Dispositif de Ressources Mutualisées, the mutualised income data system).

In concrete terms: a 21-year-old apprentice in a BTS MCO (a French 2-year post-Bac diploma in retail management) in Lille, earning around €1,120 net/month, declares his or her situation to the CAF and receives, after calculation, a prime d'activité of about €240 to €320 per month — the equivalent of a 13th month of salary over the year. For a 25-year-old apprentice in a full-time Bachelor's degree, the amount can climb up to €350 per month, or even more with a dependent person.

How the prime d'activité works for an apprentice

The basic principle

The prime d'activité is a monthly income top-up paid by the CAF to workers over 18 on modest incomes, whether they are employees, apprentices, self-employed or interns. It tops up earnings to reach a guaranteed flat-rate amount, with degressivity above a certain ceiling.

For an apprentice, the amount of the prime depends on three criteria:

  1. Household composition: single, in a couple, with or without dependent children.
  2. Net social professional income declared over the last 3 months (M-4 to M-2 relative to the entitlement quarter).
  3. The presence or absence of a dependent, which opens the right to flat-rate uplifts.

The calculation in practice

The calculation follows three official steps (articles L.842-1 to L.842-8 of the French Social Security Code):

  1. The flat-rate amount is set each year by decree (€638.28 on 1 April 2026).
  2. Add the dependent uplift (50% of the flat rate per child, capped).
  3. Subtract the household's net professional income for the reference quarter.

If the result is positive and above €15 (the payment threshold), the prime is paid for the quarter. If the result is negative or nil, no prime is due. The amount is frozen for 3 months (the "frozen" effect of the scheme).

To remember: the prime d'activité is calculated on M-4 to M-2 income, not on the current month. If you have just started your apprenticeship contract in September 2026, your first declaration will cover income from May to July 2026 — when you may have been unemployed, on an unpaid internship, or working part-time. This is why the pre-filled declaration matters: the CAF already knows your income.

Who is eligible for the prime d'activité in 2026

The conditions are set by the French Social Security Code (articles L.842-1 and following) and detailed by the annual CNAF circular. For an apprentice, the 5 cumulative conditions are:

Condition Detail
Age Be at least 18 years old (the age condition is lifted for single parents and couples).
Residence Reside in a stable and effective way in France (at least 9 months per year).
Nationality/residence status French, EU/EEA/Swiss national, or foreigner with a residence permit valid for 5 years (or 1 year for refugees).
Activity Exercise a professional activity (apprenticeship fully counts).
Income Have an income ≥ €1,117.26 net social per month in each of the 3 months of the quarter (i.e. 78% of the net SMIC).

Important exception: if you are the sole carer of one or more children (single parent), the threshold condition does not apply. You can receive the prime d'activité even if your income is below the threshold. This is worth knowing if you are an apprentice parent.

The 2026 novelty: the IT 2026-057 instruction of 5 March 2026

This is the measure that will make a difference for many apprentices in 2026. The CNAF instruction IT 2026-057, published on 5 March 2026 and integrated into the national information system on 10 March 2026 (version L2603), has corrected a regulatory bug that specifically affected apprentices.

The problem before 5 March 2026

Before the instruction, the threshold check of €1,117.26/month applied across the whole quarter, averaging the income for each month — including months when you were in a different situation to that of apprentice or employee.

In concrete terms, this is what was happening: a young person going from employee on a short-term contract (CDD) in January to apprentice in February-March saw his or her file wrongly refused, because the system averaged January income (€500 from a short CDD) with February-March income (€1,200 as an apprentice), giving an average below the threshold — even though the months in apprentice status comfortably met the threshold.

What changes with IT 2026-057

Since 5 March 2026, the check is performed month by month, only on months where the situation is "apprentice/student-trainee":

"The threshold check of €1,117.26 is now performed only on months where the beneficiary is in the situation of apprentice, vocational training student-trainee or employee/student." — Instruction IT 2026-057 of 5 March 2026.

Concrete consequence: an apprentice who starts in February 2026, after a CDD in January, now opens his or her right to the prime d'activité as of the February-March-April 2026 quarter, without waiting for the next quarter. Before, he or she would have had to wait until May-June-July to open rights — and therefore suffer 3 months of outright loss.

Who is affected by the correction

This correction benefits in priority the following three apprentice profiles:

  • Apprentices who sign their contract mid-quarter (February, March, etc.) after a period of unemployment, internship or short CDD.
  • Apprentices who change employer during the year (termination followed by a new contract).
  • Student-employees who move to apprenticeship during a quarter.

To remember: if you were refused in 2025 by the CAF for failure to meet the threshold, and your situation matches one of these three cases, re-apply: you are most likely eligible since 5 March 2026. No need to re-support your file, just resubmit the application on the simulator.

How much will you actually receive in 2026

The monthly flat-rate amount is €638.28 for a single person with no children (on 1 April 2026, decree no. 2026-222). But the amount actually received depends on your income. Here are four concrete examples calculated according to the official formula:

Example 1 — 21-year-old apprentice, 2-year post-Bac diploma, single

  • Net social salary: ~€1,120/month
  • Applicable flat rate: €638.28
  • Quarterly income: €3,360
  • Estimated prime d'activité: between €240 and €320/month

The salary of a 21-year-old apprentice in a 2-year post-Bac diploma (61% of the SMIC, i.e. about €1,120) is just above the threshold of €1,117.26. The prime is therefore paid, but for a modest amount. It is still always worthwhile: it is the equivalent of a 12th month of salary over the year.

Example 2 — 19-year-old apprentice, CAP (French vocational certificate), single

  • Net social salary: ~€960/month (54% of the SMIC for an 18-20 year old apprentice in year 1)
  • Applicable flat rate: €638.28
  • Quarterly income: €2,880
  • Estimated prime d'activité: between €380 and €420/month

A 19-year-old apprentice in year 1 of a CAP earns a salary below the threshold — he or she is not eligible for the prime d'activité. In year 2 (61% of the SMIC), he or she becomes eligible. In year 3 (78% of the SMIC), he or she receives a lower prime.

Example 3 — 24-year-old apprentice, 5-year post-Bac degree, in a couple, no children

  • Net social salary: ~€1,600/month
  • Couple's income: ~€3,200/month
  • Couple flat rate: €638.28 + 50% = €957.42
  • Estimated prime d'activité: between €80 and €200/month

As a couple, the prime is lower because the flat rate is uplifted by 50%, but the couple's income is taken into account globally. The prime remains a helpful boost but is no longer a major top-up.

Example 4 — Single-parent apprentice, 1 child

  • Net social salary: ~€1,150/month
  • Single-parent flat rate: €638.28 + 50% (1 child) = €957.42
  • Threshold condition lifted (single parent)
  • Estimated prime d'activité: between €280 and €360/month

A single parent is not subject to the €1,117.26 threshold, which allows him or her to receive the prime as soon as he or she has modest income, even below the threshold. It is one of the most powerful levers of the prime d'activité.

Note: these amounts are estimates based on the official formula. For a personalised calculation, use the CAF simulator on mesdroitssociaux.gouv.fr or caf.fr — it factors in your family situation and your actual income.

How to apply step by step

Step 1 — Check your eligibility

Before you start, 3 checks to make:

  • You are at least 18 years old (except single parent or in a couple).
  • You are on an apprenticeship contract (apprentissage or professionalisation) in progress at the start of the quarter.
  • Your monthly net social salary is ≥ €1,117.26 over the 3 months of the reference quarter (except if you are a single parent).

Step 2 — Run the online simulation

Log on to mesdroitssociaux.gouv.fr or to the "Prime d'activité" section of caf.fr. The simulator gives you an estimate in less than 5 minutes, without creating an account.

Step 3 — Create your account and submit the application

If the simulation is positive, create your CAF account (if you have not already done so) and submit your prime d'activité application. You will need:

  • Your social security number.
  • Your apprenticeship contract (or failing that, your pay slip for the 1st month).
  • Your bank account details (RIB) for payment.
  • Your postal address in France.

Step 4 — Validate the pre-filled quarterly declaration

Since 1 March 2025, the quarterly declaration is pre-filled thanks to the DRM (Dispositif de Ressources Mutualisées). The CAF automatically retrieves your income, your benefits and your replacement income in net social amount (MNS).

  • Declaration period: from the 1st to the 25th of each declaration month (usually the 1st month of each calendar quarter: January, April, July, October).
  • Data to check: salaries, benefits and replacement income are pre-filled. You must validate or correct if necessary.
  • Payment timeframe: the prime is paid from the 5th of the month following validation of the declaration.

Step 5 — Monitor payment and changes

Once the prime is open, no need to redo the steps every quarter: just validate the pre-filled declaration each quarter. The amount is automatically recalculated based on your income over the previous 3 months.

To remember: if you change employer during a quarter, or if you start your apprenticeship mid-quarter, wait until the end of the month to validate the declaration — the IT 2026-057 of 5 March 2026 has corrected the bug that was depriving some apprentices of their right. Validate after the 25th of the last month of the quarter to give the CAF time to integrate your status change.

What can be stacked with apprenticeship

The prime d'activité is stackable with almost all aids aimed at apprentices and students. Here are the main authorised stacks:

Aid Stackable with prime d'activité
APL (personal housing aid) Yes, with no cap
Mobili-Jeune (housing aid for apprentices) Yes, with no cap
Driving licence aid (up to €500 for apprentices) Yes, with no cap
Family allowances Yes, subject to income conditions
Merit-based aids (social criteria grants) Yes, subject to conditions
Apprentice salary Yes — that is the very principle of the prime d'activité
Regional apprenticeship aids Yes, in most regions
Rental income No, counted in the calculation
Unemployment benefits Partial — subject to conditions

To remember: the prime d'activité is one of the most stackable aids in the French social system. You can receive the prime d'activité and APL and Mobili-Jeune and your apprentice salary — it is a top-up, not an exclusive aid.

The SuperAlternant advice

The prime d'activité is one of the most under-used aids by apprentices: according to DREES, only 38% of eligible apprentices actually apply. The reason: many wrongly believe it is reserved for precarious employees or part-timers, whereas it is fully open to full-time apprentices whose salary is close to the SMIC.

Three reflexes to adopt as soon as you sign your contract:

  • Create your CAF account in the month following your start date, even before your first declaration. The 3-month waiting period starts from the date of submission, not from the contract start date.
  • Check the "apprentice" mention in your employer's DSN (Déclaration Sociale Nominative, the French monthly social declaration): this is what allows the CAF to identify you as an apprentice, and therefore to lift certain eligibility conditions.
  • Run the simulation on mesdroitssociaux.gouv.fr even if you think you are not eligible: many apprentices discover that they receive several hundred euros per month without knowing it.

In 2026, with the IT 2026-057 instruction of 5 March and the 0.8% revaluation on 1 April, the prime d'activité is more accessible and more generous than it has ever been. If you are in apprenticeship and have not applied, now is the time: between €200 and €400 per month of top-up, that is a rent payment or a meal a day that you are giving yourself effortlessly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the exact amount of the prime d'activité for an apprentice in 2026? The 2026 flat-rate amount is €638.28/month for a single person with no children, revalued by +0.8% on 1 April 2026 (decree no. 2026-222 of 30 March 2026). The amount actually received depends on your income for the quarter: it can vary from €15 (payment threshold) to €638 (theoretical maximum).

I am 19, am I eligible for the prime d'activité? Yes, provided you are at least 18 years old. The age condition is lifted for single parents and couples. If you are 19 and an apprentice, you are eligible if your net social salary is ≥ €1,117.26/month (which corresponds to a 2nd or 3rd year apprentice salary).

Is the prime d'activité stackable with APL? Yes, the prime d'activité is stackable with no cap with APL, Mobili-Jeune, the driving licence aid, family allowances and the vast majority of social aids. It is one of the most stackable aids in the French system.

When does my application take effect? The starting point of your rights is the date you submit your application, not the start date of your contract. This is why it is crucial to submit your application as soon as possible after signing your contract — ideally within the following month.

How does the IT 2026-057 of 5 March 2026 change things? This CNAF instruction has corrected a regulatory bug that deprived many apprentices of their rights in case of a status change during a quarter (switching from employee to apprentice, or vice versa). Since 5 March 2026, the €1,117.26 threshold check is performed month by month, only on months in apprentice status. Many apprentices will recover rights they thought were lost.

What if I am wrongly refused? If you were refused by the CAF in 2025 for failure to meet the threshold, and your situation matches a status change during a quarter, re-apply from 5 March 2026. You can also contest the decision by an administrative appeal to your CAF, or by an appeal to the administrative court (tribunal administratif, TA) within 2 months of notification.

Do I need to declare the prime d'activité on my taxes? No. The prime d'activité is exempt from income tax and from social contributions. It is not to be declared on your tax notice. On the other hand, your apprentice salary remains taxable under ordinary law.

Can my CFA help me with the application? Yes, many CFAs support their apprentices with administrative steps (CAF, CPAM, taxes). Ask your pedagogical referent or your administrative service: this is often the quickest way to get support.

In summary

The 2026 prime d'activité is one of the most accessible income top-ups for apprentices in France. With a flat rate of €638.28 per month, an income threshold of €1,117.26 often met by apprentices at Bac+2 and above, and a recent easing of the threshold check by the IT 2026-057 instruction of 5 March 2026, it is an aid to apply for without delay as soon as you sign your contract. Stack it with APL, Mobili-Jeune and your apprentice salary: it is the equivalent of a 12th month of salary over the year, with no age condition other than majority, and no income condition for single parents. If you are in apprenticeship and have not applied, now is the time: run the simulation on mesdroitssociaux.gouv.fr today.
