You have just validated your Bachelor's (L3), your Bachelor's degree, or your 3-year higher education (Bac+3), and you are aiming for a Master's in work-study (alternance) for the 2026 back-to-school season? Good news: the apprenticeship route remains the most accessible way to fund your final year (M2) or your full cycle (M1+M2) as a salaried employee. Bad news: selectivity has risen again in 2026, and funding has been refocused by the 2026 Finance Act (law no. 2026-103, 19 February 2026). To turn your Mon Master application into a signed apprenticeship contract, you need to understand who is hiring, when to apply, and how much your employer can receive in aid. Here is the complete guide — figures, calendar, NPEC, school by school — to give yourself every chance by September 2026, with SuperAlternant.

What you need to know about the Master's in work-study (alternance) for the 2026 back-to-school season

  • What is it? A Master's in apprenticeship (M1 or M2) completed under an apprenticeship contract over 12 or 24 months, at a pace of 2 to 3 weeks in the company / 1 to 2 weeks in class (depending on the Master's rhythm). The diploma is identical to a regular Master's, with the same grade (5-year higher education / Bac+5) and the same RNCP registration.
  • Who is it for? All holders of a 3-year higher education diploma (Bac+3) (general Bachelor's, professional Bachelor's, Bachelor's degree, BUT3) who are aiming for a national Master's diploma (DNM) at a university, an IAE (University School of Management), a business school, or an engineering school accredited to award the Master's grade.
  • 2026 calendar: the Mon Master platform opened its application window on 17 February 2026 and closed it on 16 March 2026, with institutions required to respond by 16 June 2026 at the latest. For Master's in apprenticeship, many schools recruit outside of Mon Master, on their own portals, until September 2026.
  • Why it is strategic in 2026: the 2026 Finance Act has refocused work-study aid on levels 4 and 5 (CAP, Bac pro, BTS, BUT), while maintaining a single apprenticeship grant of €2,000 for levels 6 and 7 (Bachelor's, Master's, engineering diploma) at companies with fewer than 250 employees. Larger companies must deal with a lower NPEC (tutorship funding level) for Master's programmes, which increases selectivity on the employer side.
  • 2026 selectivity: according to the 2025 Mon Master procedure review published by the Ministry of Higher Education, 1 in 6 candidates received an admission offer to a Master's in 2025, compared with 1 in 4 in 2020. In apprenticeship, selectivity is lower but the quality of your career project and your ability to find a company are decisive.
  • Aid available to Master's in work-study programmes: single apprenticeship grant (€2,000 at < 250 employees, €750 at ≥ 250), social security exemptions on the portion of salary below 79% of the SMIC (French minimum wage), CPF (personal training account) usable for tuition fees, €500 driving licence aid (permis B) for apprentice majors, and Action Logement housing support (Visale, Loca-Pass) — as detailed in our 2026 work-study aid overview.
  • 2026 pay: an apprentice aged 21 to 25 in M1 earns 53% of the SMIC (around €961 net/month in 2026), while an apprentice aged 26 or older earns 100% of the SMIC (around €1,820 net/month in 2026). Our work-study pay calculator gives you the exact figure based on your situation.
  • For 2026 Master's candidates: the delayed October 2026 intake remains a credible option for Master's students who have not found a company in September, as we explained in our article on the delayed October 2026 intake.

In concrete terms: a student in an Economics and Management Bachelor's in Toulouse, who is aiming for an M2 in Digital Marketing in apprenticeship for the 2026 back-to-school season, must submit 2 M1 choices on Mon Master in February–March 2026, apply in parallel through the portals of business schools (TBS, IESEG, KEDGE), activate La bonne alternance to find a company (agency, startup, e-retailer), and sign her apprenticeship contract at the latest 3 months after intake — as we detail in our guide on how to find a work-study contract in 2026.

2026 calendar for the Master's in work-study: the 4 dates to remember

The 2026 calendar combines the national Mon Master procedure and school-by-school recruitment. Here are the 4 key dates every candidate should know.

1. 17 February 2026 — Mon Master application window opens

The monmaster.gouv.fr platform opened on 17 February 2026 for the 2026–2027 campaign. Each candidate can submit up to 15 Master's choices, in M1 (1st year of Master's) or M2 (2nd year of Master's), across a maximum of 3 main tracks (mentions) and a maximum of 15 sub-tracks (sub-mentions).

Important point: not every Master's is open to apprenticeship. To identify Master's programmes available in work-study mode, filter by the "alternance" mode on the platform, and cross-check with the RNCP certifications list published by France Compétences (francecompetences.fr). Our article on the new France Compétences certifications of May 2026 lists the Master's programmes newly registered for apprenticeship.

2. 16 March 2026 — Mon Master application deadline

Applications on Mon Master close on 16 March 2026. Beyond that date, you must go through the schools' own portals (business schools, engineering schools, IAE). Schools outside Mon Master generally recruit from January to July 2026 through their own entrance exam, application file, and interview — with a candidacy rhythm similar to a university Master's.

3. 16 June 2026 — Institutions' response deadline

Institutions must respond to candidates by 16 June 2026 at the latest: admitted, on waiting list, or refused. For apprenticeship Master's programmes, many institutions select in two stages: academic admission (file, interview), then a company search carried out by the student. This is the critical link: a candidate can be academically admitted but not admitted in apprenticeship for lack of a company.

4. September 2026 — Effective intake (and delayed October intake)

Intake runs from mid-September to early October 2026 depending on the Master's programme. For candidates who have not found a company by September, the delayed October 2026 intake is a common option: the 3-month window to sign an apprenticeship contract after the start of training is still in force in 2026, as provided for by article L. 6222-12-1 of the French Labour Code.

Who hires for a Master's in work-study for the 2026 back-to-school season: top 6 families of Master's programmes

Not all Master's programmes are equal in apprenticeship. Here is the 2026 panorama of the Master's families that hire the most, with the career options, ROME codes (French job classification), and target companies.

1. Master's in Marketing, Communication and Digital (all regions)

This is the largest pool of offers: 35% of work-study offers at Master's level (Bac+5) according to the 2025 Dares review. Agencies (Publicis, Havas, Dentsu), pure players (Cdiscount, Fnac-Darty, Veepee), and startups (Station F, Euratech) recruit heavily.

Typical title ROME code Target companies
M2 Digital Marketing E1103 Agencies, pure players, startups
M2 Brand Management E1103 Brand owners (L'Oréal, Danone)
M2 Corporate Communication E1103 Mid-cap companies, consultancies
M2 Data Marketing M1805 Digital service companies (ESN), retailers, e-retailers
M2 UX Design E1104 Digital agencies, large accounts

Key takeaway: selectivity is high on these programmes, but the number of offers remains large. Target 3 to 5 Master's programmes in parallel (university + business school) to maximise your chances.

2. Master's in Finance, Audit and Management Control (Île-de-France, PACA, AURA)

M2 Market Finance, M2 Audit, and M2 Management Control remain must-have steps towards the Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) and banks (BNP Paribas, Société Générale, CACIB). ROME code M1205 is central.

Typical title ROME code Target companies
M2 Audit and Control (DSCG) M1205 Big 4, audit firms
M2 Market Finance C1203 Banks, asset managers
M2 Corporate Finance C1203 Investment banks, M&A
M2 Wealth Management C1202 Wealth management advisors
M2 Risk Management C1109 Banks, insurance companies

Key takeaway: selectivity is maximal on these programmes. M1 grades and fluency in English (TOEFL/IELTS) are decisive. The September 2026 DCG/DSCG resit session can allow you to validate a block of skills in parallel, as we explained in our article on the BTS/DCG/DSCG resit session.

3. Master's in Computer Science, Data and Cybersecurity (Île-de-France, AURA, PACA, Hauts-de-France)

Computer science Master's (M2 Data Science, M2 Cybersecurity, M2 Artificial Intelligence) are structurally in tension on the recruitment side: tech companies (Capgemini, Sopra Steria, Atos, OVHcloud, Doctolib) recruit all year round M1 and M2 apprentices.

Typical title ROME code Target companies
M2 Data Science / Machine Learning M1805 ESN, scale-ups, large accounts
M2 Cybersecurity M1802 Operators of essential services (OIV), mid-cap, specialised ESN
M2 Software Engineering M1805 Software vendors, ESN, tech scale-ups
M2 Cloud / DevOps Architect M1802 ESN, pure players
M2 Artificial Intelligence M1805 Research, AI scale-ups

Key takeaway: these programmes are open to career changers (engineers, non-CS Bachelor's) provided they have validated an M1 or an intensive bootcamp. The new France Compétences certifications of May 2026 have registered several AI Master's programmes in apprenticeship, which broadens the offer in 2026.

4. Master's in Supply Chain, Logistics and Purchasing (all regions)

The M2 Supply Chain and M2 International Purchasing have been structurally in tension since the post-Covid reindustrialisation and reshoring. Companies (Renault, Airbus, Decathlon, Lidl, Amazon) recruit in M1 and M2 in work-study mode to feed their supply chain divisions.

Typical title ROME code Target companies
M2 Supply Chain Management N1302 Industry, large retail
M2 International Purchasing N1302 Mid-cap, large international groups
M2 Logistics and Transport N4101 Carriers, logistics providers
M2 Supply Chain Engineering N1302 Industry, e-commerce
M2 Industrial Planning H1402 Industry, automotive

Key takeaway: selectivity is lower than for finance Master's, and starting salaries are among the highest (€38,000 to €45,000 at the end of M2 according to Dares 2025).

5. Master's in HR, Management and HRIS (all regions)

HR Master's programmes (M2 HR Management, M2 HRIS, M2 Organisational Management) recruit heavily in work-study mode at large companies, ESN, mid-cap firms (ETI), and public sector bodies. They are a gateway to HR support roles, recruitment, and skills development.

Typical title ROME code Target companies
M2 HR Management M1502 Companies, HR consultancies
M2 HRIS / HR Digitalisation M1805 HR-focused ESN, large accounts
M2 Training and Skills Development M1502 Companies, training consultancies
M2 Quality of Work Life and Transformation M1502 ESN, mid-cap
M2 Organisational Consulting M1402 Consultancies, ESN

Key takeaway: these programmes recruit all year round and welcome diverse profiles (literature, humanities, administrative and economic sciences). They are a good fallback option for candidates who have not been placed in finance or data.

6. Master's in Engineering and Energy (AURA, PACA, Île-de-France, Hauts-de-France)

Engineering schools (Centrale, INSA, Arts et Métiers, Polytech) and university engineering Master's recruit heavily in apprenticeship. The energy transition and reindustrialisation keep demand high for profiles in electrical engineering, civil engineering, renewable energies, and process engineering.

Typical title ROME code Target companies
M2 Electrical / Energy Engineering H1502 EDF, Engie, Schneider, RTE
M2 Civil Engineering / Construction F1703 Vinci, Bouygues, Eiffage
M2 Process Engineering H1402 Chemical industry, pharma
M2 Renewable Energies H1502 EDF Renouvelables, Engie Green, TotalEnergies
M2 Maintenance Engineering I1304 Industry, transport

Key takeaway: selectivity is high (maths, physics), but career prospects are excellent and starting salaries are among the highest (€40,000 to €50,000 at the end of M2 according to Apec).

How to land a Master's in work-study for the 2026 back-to-school season: the 6-step method

Step 1 — Identify Master's programmes open to apprenticeship

Three tools to cross-reference:

  • Mon Master platform: filter by track (mention), "alternance" mode, and institution. The 2026–2027 Master's list has been online since 17 February 2026.
  • Répertoire national des certifications professionnelles (RNCP) (French national directory of professional certifications) on francecompetences.fr: cross-check with the diploma code to identify Master's programmes approved for apprenticeship.
  • Schools' internal lists: business schools and engineering schools have their own apprenticeship Master's programmes, often not visible on Mon Master. Target 3 to 5 institutions and check their portals.

For a macro view of the 2026 market, browse our 2026 work-study barometer and our overview of the sectors hiring the most in work-study mode in 2026.

Step 2 — Build a solid application (CV, cover letter, career project)

For a Master's in apprenticeship, the application file is just as important as grades. Schools expect:

  • A structured CV: experience, projects, technical skills, certifications. Take inspiration from our CV and cover letter guide for work-study.
  • A targeted cover letter: per Master's programme, per school. Show why this track, why this school, and why work-study mode as your preferred path.
  • A well-argued career project: a candidate who can tell the story of their project (target job, sector, trajectory) reassures the jury and the company.
  • Recommendations: 1 to 2 letters (professor, internship supervisor, employer) optional but useful for selective Master's programmes.

Step 3 — Prepare for selection interviews and orals

For business schools (TAGE, GMAT, creative writing tests) and engineering schools (motivation interviews, maths tests), preparation is essential. For universities, it is usually an oral interview before a panel of teacher-researchers. Prepare:

  • Your academic background (Bachelor's, internships, projects)
  • Your career project (target job, sector, prospects)
  • Your knowledge of work-study mode (rhythm, constraints, benefits)
  • Your motivation for the track (research, teaching, speakers)

To practise, take inspiration from our guide to succeeding in the work-study interview.

Step 4 — Activate every channel to find a company

For a Master's in apprenticeship, the company is decisive: without a company, there is no definitive admission. Activate in parallel:

  • La bonne alternance (labonnealternance.pole-emploi.fr): the apprenticeship job board, with filter by ROME code and email alerts.
  • Spontaneous applications to SMEs, mid-cap firms (ETI) and large groups: target HR divisions, marketing divisions, finance divisions depending on your Master's track.
  • Professional social networks: LinkedIn (all sectors), Viadeo (engineers), HelloWork (SMEs).
  • Recruitment fairs: Studyrama fairs, apprenticeship fairs, APEC events, top-school forums.
  • Personal network: Bachelor's alumni, professors, internship supervisors, alumni of your target Master's programmes.
  • SuperAlternant job offers: browse SuperAlternant work-study offers filtered by Master's level, region and sector.

Step 5 — Understand the 2026 NPEC and the single grant to convince the employer

For a Master's in apprenticeship, the single apprenticeship grant funds part of the cost. Since the 2026 Finance Act (law no. 2026-103, 19 February 2026), the single grant has been restructured:

  • Companies with fewer than 250 employees: €5,000 up to level 4 (CAP, Bac pro); €4,500 for level 5 (BTS, BUT); €2,000 for levels 6 and 7 (Bachelor's, Master's, engineering diploma).
  • Companies with 250 employees or more: €2,000 up to level 4; €1,500 for level 5; €750 for levels 6 and 7.
  • Disability bonus: + €6,000 for RQTH apprentices (recognised as disabled workers), cumulative with the Agefiph grant.

On the NPEC side, the 3rd general review launched by France Compétences on 2 April 2026 has lowered the funding levels for several level 6 and 7 certifications, which reduces CFA margins. According to the decree of 29 May 2026, professional branches now benefit from a modulation capacity of +30% (versus +20% previously) to adjust NPEC by certification.

Key takeaway: the single grant is lower for levels 6 and 7, but remains significant for < 250-employee companies. For an M2 Master's (24 months), this means €4,000 in cumulative aid (€2,000 x 2 years) at an SME. This is a negotiation lever worth mentioning to the employer.

To go further, read our detailed article on the 2026 NPEC review and apprenticeship funding.

Step 6 — Secure funding and housing

A Master's in apprenticeship is paid by the company. But while waiting for the first salary, several aids are available:

  • Salary advance: some companies pay an advance as soon as the contract is signed.
  • €500 driving licence aid (permis B): paid by the French state to apprentice majors, as detailed in our 2026 apprentice driving licence guide.
  • Visale guarantee: free guarantee for your rent (3-year cover), accessible to those under 30.
  • Loca-Pass: advance of €1,200 on the security deposit, repayable over 36 months.
  • CFA emergency fund: some CFAs have an emergency aid fund for apprentices in difficulty.
  • Action Logement: our article on housing aids for work-study apprentices in 2026 details all the schemes available.

6 bonus tips to land a Master's in work-study in 2026

1. Multiply your application channels

For a Master's in work-study, a single application channel (Mon Master, for example) is not enough. Combine Mon Master + school portals + spontaneous applications + La bonne alternance + network. The more irons you have in the fire, the more likely you are to sign before September 2026.

2. Prepare for selection tests

Tage-Mage, GMAT, GRE, IELTS/TOEFL: business and engineering schools require tests taken between January and April 2026. Target 2 to 3 test dates per exam to give yourself time to progress without putting all your eggs in one basket.

3. Polish your English

For an M2 at a university or school, a minimum B2 level is almost systematic in the requirements, and a C1 is frequent for international Master's programmes. Take the TOEFL/IELTS between January and April 2026, and include your score in your Mon Master application.

4. Build a well-argued career project

Juries are demanding about the coherence of your project. A candidate going from a History Bachelor's → M2 Digital Marketing without explaining the transition will be ruled out. A candidate who did a communication internship and a dissertation on digital marketing will be prioritised.

5. Anticipate the delayed October intake

If you have not signed an apprenticeship contract by 1 October 2026, you have 3 months to finalise a contract, as provided for by article L. 6222-12-1 of the French Labour Code. Many apprenticeship Master's programmes accept delayed intakes in October and even January 2027. Our article on the delayed October 2026 intake in work-study mode lists the Master's programmes recruiting late.

6. Activate support schemes

  • APEC: for students at Bac+4 level and above, APEC offers free support: CV workshops, interview simulations, company introductions.
  • CROUS: some CROUS (student welfare offices) offer grants for apprentices in difficulty (in addition to salary).
  • Your university's work-study cell: it supports the company search and can connect you with partner employers.
  • Disability cell (if RQTH): enhanced support, Agefiph aid cumulative with the single grant.

To go further

In summary

The Master's in work-study for the 2026 back-to-school season remains a top-tier route for holders of a 3-year higher education diploma (Bac+3) who want to fund their final year of studies, gain significant experience in a company, and sign a permanent contract in sectors in tension (marketing, finance, data, supply chain, HR, engineering). Selectivity has increased — 1 in 6 candidates received a Master's offer in 2025 — but the apprenticeship offer remains solid: the 2026 Finance Act refocuses aid on levels 4 and 5, while maintaining the €2,000 single grant for levels 6 and 7 at SMEs. The key: identify Master's programmes in apprenticeship (Mon Master + school portals), build a solid application (CV, cover letter, career project, recommendations), activate every company-search channel (La bonne alternance, spontaneous applications, LinkedIn, fairs), understand the 2026 NPEC and the single grant to convince the employer, and anticipate the delayed October 2026 intake if you have nothing lined up by September. It is a demanding but accessible market: with rigorous preparation, you can turn your Mon Master application into a signed apprenticeship contract, and fund your M2 while building your professional network for the next step.
